This project, like MANY of my projects was inspired by an image I found on Pinterest…
I just fell in love with this coastal mantle from The Lettered Cottage and decided to give it a try!
Instead of wood planks or pallets, I used something MUCH cheaper, and lighter, and easier…white foam board! You know, that really thick posterboard with a foam center- you can pick it up at any craft store or Walmart.
Here's what I did:
First, I used an exacto knife to cut the foam board into "planks"(this step not pictured).
Then, I painted the "planks" a pretty soft blue and creamy white. I painted it very "rough" to give an appearance of weathering.
Then, I hot glued each plank onto another piece of foamboard (which was not cut).
I arranged the planks so there was a little space between each and didn't line them up perfectly on the edges to give it a rough home-made feel!
Finally, I glued 9 baby white starfish on the stripes area to simulate an American flag. (BTW: I sell these starfish on my Etsy shop Starfish Trading Company for craft purposes!)
I wasn't so sure how this project would turn out, but I LOVE it! It's a great addition to our Red, White and Blue Family Room.
OBVIOUSLY, we move it when we watch tv, and since it is so lightweight it's really easy to move!
I have another DIY coming up for Coastal Mason Jars like the one pictured here.
Wishing everyone a very happy and safe 4th of July!
